Acne, Scars & Products Later: How I Built a Skincare Ritual That Works

Here’s a little background on my skin journey: I dealt with severe acne for many many (oh so many) years, followed by the long road of scarring. I’d always been careful with the products I used, even before my subcision procedure, but after the treatment—and moving to Japan—my skincare routine became a full-on ritual. I remember watching a YouTube video about five years ago and thinking, 'Who needs that many products?' Well...now I get it. My lineup includes a good mix of products, devices, and quarterly professional facials. I’m still on the lookout for 'my person'—a skincare specialist for darker skin tones—which can be challenging to find here in Japan, but I’m hopeful!

Below is a list of products and devices that’s a part of my skin care routine (not in a specific order).

  1. Vitapair C Daily Mask

Start your morning with a burst of freshness! After cleansing, I apply this daily mask packed with juju lemon and vitamin C. It brightens and gives my skin that morning boost, setting the tone for the rest of my routine.

  2. Quality 1st Ulthera R

This powerful night serum combines retinal and niacinamide to target fine lines and dark spots. I use it every 2-3 days, and it works while I sleep, so I wake up to smoother, refreshed skin.

  3. Country and Stream Herbal Night Eye Roll-On

This eye treatment is my nighttime eye hero. I apply it before bed to reduce puffiness and hydrate the delicate eye area with gentle herbal extracts.

  4. Cica x Hyalon Reedles S300

A staple in my morning routine, I use this needle-free formula 2-3 times weekly. It soothes, strengthens, and preps my skin for the rest of the products to come.

  5. Verdio Sunscreen SPF 50

In Okinawa’s strong sun, this is non-negotiable. My last morning step, Verdio provides SPF 50 protection, and sometimes I reapply it in the afternoon to stay shielded all day.

  6. Cica x Hyalon Mild Toner

A gentle toner to calm and prep my skin for better absorption. I use it before layering other products to keep my skin smooth and hydrated.

  7. Unlabel Lab Vitamin C 100MPa Essence

Vitamin C is essential for brightening and fighting discoloration. I use this after the Vitapair mask in the morning or after the Reedles S300 if I’m using it that day.

  8. Artistry Sleeping Mask

This is my nightly final step. I apply this mask every night for a deep hydration boost, and by morning, my skin feels soft and plump.

  9. Mediheal Eye Mask

For that extra touch of eye care, I use this mask 2-3 times a week, right before the eye roll-on, to deeply hydrate and smooth the under-eye area.

  10. Lerosett Clear Skin Wash

A clear skin essential! This gentle wash keeps my skin balanced and removes impurities without drying it out.

  11. Lerosett Spot Treatment

For those pesky breakouts, this spot treatment is my go-to. It tackles blemishes quickly and minimizes inflammation.

  12. Facial Steamer

Once a week, I give my skin a full refresh with a steam session to open pores, enhance absorption, and keep my complexion radiant.

  13. Face Massager (with Heat Setting)

For a little self-care, I use my face massager with a warming setting once a week. It helps with circulation and gives my skin a healthy glow.

  14. Food Allergy Pill

Living in Japan with a soy allergy, I have to be careful. My allergy pill is a must to help avoid any unexpected reactions.

  15. Quarterly Facials

Professional facials every few months keep my skin at its best, though finding a specialist here in Japan can be tricky. These sessions are key for deeper care and that extra glow.

Wow, 15 products is a lot, but I find them all to be extremely beneficial. My skin feels absolutely AMAZING.

What products do you use and/or recommend?
